Our whole-house energy audit identifies at the building envelope (which includes all the components that make up your home’s outer shell, including windows, doors, insulation levels, and the level of air leakage in between building materials); all combustion equipment including boilers, furnaces and water heaters; and the movement of air within the home to ensure that the air you and your family are breathing is fresh, healthy and safe. During the audit, we use an infrared camera to identify air leakage and deficient insulation, a blower door to measure the rate of air infiltration in the home, and a duct blaster test to determine whether your ducts are well-sealed, among other tools.

Thermography is the use of an infrared imaging and measurement camera to “see” and “measure” thermal energy emitted from an object.

Thermal, or infrared energy, is light that is not visible because its wavelength is too long to be detected by the human eye; it’s the part of the electromagnetic spectrum that we perceive as heat. Unlike visible light, in the infrared world, everything with a temperature above absolute zero emits heat. Even very cold objects, like ice cubes, emit infrared. The higher the object’s temperature, the greater the infrared radiation emitted.

Infrared thermography allows us to see what our eyes cannot. Infrared thermography cameras produce images of invisible infrared or “heat” radiation and provide precise non-contact temperature measurement capabilities. It is a valuable diagnostic tool in determining the need for home and commercial building insulation. INTEC technicians use infrared thermography cameras to see where the air leaks are, and where insulation voids exist inside wall cavities.

Blower door testing is a way to test the “leakiness” of your home. By depressurizing your home and measuring the rate at which air infiltrates through imperfections in the building envelope, we’re able to assess how much energy (and money) is escaping through air leaks, and how much you’re likely to save by fixing those leaks.

As part of this process, we will inspect the house with a smoke stick to pinpoint potentially hidden air leaks (making it much easier to address them when the time comes to get to work).

We also offer blower door testing as an isolated service to test the effectiveness of improvements that have been made to a home, and to provide homeowners and contractors with a roadmap to further improve a home’s efficiency moving forward.
